Music in Schools Month

March 2017

We're dedicated to enriching the lives of our community's children through artistic expression in the classroom. The MSO standard of excellence extends beyond the concert hall and into the community, reaching more than 40,000 children and their families through its Arts in Community Education (ACE) program, Youth and Teen concerts, Meet the Music pre-concert talks, and Friday Evening Post-Concert Talkbacks.

This season, we join our partners at Civic Music Association to celebrate music education and the music educators who enrich their students’ lives each year with the power of music. We invite you to join us in saluting music teachers this month. As part of our celebration, the following educators will be recognized on Educators’ Night at our March 11 performance. We honor them for their individual contributions to music education in our city:

Michael Van Pelt, Milwaukee, Music Teacher of the Year

Megan Aswegan, Mequon, Excellence in Instrumental Music Instruction

Marjorie Flanigan, Milwaukee, Excellence in Vocal Music Instruction

Heather Cheslock, Sussex, Excellence in General Music Instruction

Adrien Zitoun, Shorewood, Excellence in Studio Music Instruction

Jane Borden, Milwaukee, ACE Teacher of the Year

Thank you to our award winners and to all teachers who are passionate about arts and music education in our schools.

ABOUT Music in Schools Month

March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month®, the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools are where all children should have access to music.
