MSO 2016 Neighborhood Residency Program
September 24-October 2
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Riverwest and Harambee communities present “Symphony in the Neighborhood” this fall! From porches to bars to markets, we’ll bring the music out of the concert hall and into the community where people live, work, and play.
Food Drive for Harambee Kitchen
Sept 1 – 28: Donations of food accepted to benefit Harambee Kitchen through All People’s Church and St. Vincent de Paul.
Drop off at MSO Administrative Office at 1101 N. Market Street during office hours (9:00a – 5:00p, Monday through Friday)
Musician Porch Serenades
Sept 26 at 6:00p
You never know who you might see appearing to delight you with a pop-up performance! Performers make the rounds, meeting neighbors at the door.
After School Concert at MLK Library
Sept 27 at 5:00p
Do you hang out at the library after school or work? Watch performers up close, ask how hard it is to tune an instrument, and what our musicians do when they go to the library! Who knows what they’ll do – "Name that Tune," play a duet, or hand you a pair of tickets to a show?
Hangout at Holton Youth & Family Center
Sept 28 at 4:00p
Have you ever played a marimba, or wondered what it’s like to be a recording engineer? Try your hand at “Name that Tune,” experience our instrument petting zoo, and ask our musicians and technical team those burning questions!
Secret Symphony at Flux Design
Doors open at 6:00p with food, activities, and drinks
Performance at 7:00p
Flux Design will host the Milwaukee Symphony at their metal shop! Be moved by some Mozart and groove to some not-so-classic surprises. Hom Woodfired Grill supplies plentiful, flavorful bites for all, and their bartenders can’t wait to get you a cold one before the tunes start. Tickets will go fast at $5, so snap a couple up and meet us for a great night out full of music and art! This is the wild side of the Milwaukee Symphony.
Family Fun at Heartlove Place
October 1 at 1:00p
Free and open to all!
Free and open to all! Did you meet us at the Back to School instrument petting zoo? We had so much fun sharing our instruments with kids and parents alike. Don’t miss the full Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in Heartlove Place’s auditorium! We can’t wait to share excerpts from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, John Williams’s Star Wars: Suite for Orchestra, and the Duke Ellington Fantasy. Bugs Bunny did a great job of making a lot of these famous. How many do you remember?
Chamber Concert at Friends Meetinghouse
October 2 at 5:00p
Free concert, reservation is required to attend
Have you seen the beautiful meeting room in the Koenen Nature Preserve? Neither had Yaniv Dinur, our assistant conductor! It’s one of the spaces he’s fallen in love with in getting to know Riverwest and Harambee. Come hear Milwaukee Symphony musicians fill this gorgeous space with sound. Take a moment to reflect as you watch the trees change all around you. This pay-as-you-can performance will let you experience what our musicians do best: move you with music.
Catch MSO musicians performing and chatting with neighbors all around the neighborhood.

Riverwest and Harambee have active and amazing neighborhood associations and volunteers, which made both areas an easy choice for our inaugural residency. In fact, we’ve already visited over the summer for events including Riverwest24 and Center Street Daze. At Heartlove Place's Back to School Day, we had the privilege of meeting nearly 1000 residents at our instrument petting zoo and ticket giveaway.
We’re just getting started! In partnership with Riverwest, Harambee, and the Riverworks Center, we’ll present over 20 unique experiences during our week-long residency.
