CONCERT DETAILS

The MSO holds nothing back in its season opener, which centers around Beethoven’s iconic Ninth Symphony in celebration of the composer’s landmark 250th birthday. Responding directly to Beethoven is Absolute Jest, in which composer John Adams warps fragments of the Ninth, Beethoven’s late string quartets, and more. “[Beethoven’s themes] appear and disappear, they get stretched, I turn them upside down, I pile one on top of another on top of another and create a very dynamic dialogue,” says Adams. This can’t-miss program opens with a commissioned world premiere by composer Eric Nathan — a fitting choice, as his music contains “a nod to the Classics with an eye to the present and future” (Arts-Louisville).
