CONCERT DETAILS

Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits — “an inspired architect with an energizing presence” (The Telegraph) — makes his MSO debut with Tchaikovsky’s second symphony, called the “Little Russian” for its use of Russian and Ukrainian folk themes throughout; this is some of Tchaikovsky’s most cheerful music, reflecting his deep love for the region. Another fellow countryman, Mussorgsky, draws on Russian legend for his haunting tone poem Night on Bald Mountain, instantly recognizable for its prominence around Halloween and in Disney’s Fantasia. Ingrid Fliter joins the orchestra for Beethoven’s gentle and witty second piano concerto. This program opens with a unique treat: the Concerto Triptych for string orchestra composed by Ivan Karabits, father of guest conductor Kirill.

How you'll feel: roused by a musical panorama of Russia and Ukraine

What to listen for:

  • Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain is widely recognized from Disney’s Fantasia and has become a Halloween staple — give it a listen and you’ll understand why!
  • Ingrid Fliter joins the MSO to perform Beethoven’s second piano concerto; get a taste of her approach to Beethoven.
  • In the words of composer Ivan Karabits, “My music [is] characterized by a desire to synthesize different musical sources...Mahler, Lyatoshynsky, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, [are some who] influence my music.”

The MSO Steinway piano was made possible through a generous gift from Michael & Jeanne Schmitz
