Containing the final notes that Mozart ever composed, his requiem is considered one of the most sublime pieces of music ever written. Guest conductor Jaime Martín takes the podium as the MSO and the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus breathe life into this staggering work of tenderness, intensity, and beauty. At the top of the program: each of the four tone poems in Max Reger’s suite is inspired by a mood-invoking painting by Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin: “Hermit Fiddler” (yearning); “In the Play of the Waves” (joy); “The Isle of the Dead” (meditation); and “Bacchanal” (festivity).

What to listen for:

The Requiem is Mozart at his finest, and that’s saying a lot. (Though it’s also worth noting that he died before finishing it — other composers have contributed to its completion.)
Because it follows the format of a Catholic Requiem Mass, it includes traditional elements including an introductory prayer, Kyrie eleison (“Lord, have mercy”), Dies irae (description of Judgment Day), and Offertorium (ceremonial offertory).
