CONCERT DETAILS

Zlatomir Fung, the youngest cellist to win first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, takes the stage with Shostakovich’s first cello concerto, one of the finest pieces in all of the cello repertoire. Shostakovich dedicated his chamber symphony (originally his eighth string quartet, performed here with Rudolf Barshai’s orchestration for strings) “in memory of victims of fascism and war,” though its emotional music suggests a more autobiographical story. Led by former MSO Resident Conductor Yaniv Danur, these concerts are bookended with music by Mozart, beginning with the overture to his gossipy opera The Marriage of Figaro and ending with his inventive “Linz” symphony, composed in a quick four days after a last minute request for a concert during a visit to Linz, Austria.

How you’ll feel: astonished by two of orchestral music’s greatest composers

What to listen for:

  • Shostakovich’s first cello concerto is an incredibly challenging piece of music — although the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom the piece is dedicated, was so taken by the concerto that he memorized it in four days.
  • Picking up where the story of The Barber of Seville left off, Mozart’s opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro is full of intrigues, disguises, plots, and ruses — and you can hear this comic energy in its overture.
