CONCERT DETAILS

Zlatomir Fung, the youngest cellist to win first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, takes the stage with Shostakovich’s first cello concerto, one of the finest pieces in all of cello repertoire. Shostakovich dedicated his chamber symphony (originally his eighth string quartet, performed here with Rudolf Barshai’s orchestration for strings) “in memory of victims of fascism and war,” though its emotional music suggests a more autobiographical story. Led by former MSO Resident Conductor Yaniv Danur, these concerts are bookended with music by Mozart, beginning with the overture to his gossipy opera The Marriage of Figaro and ending with his inventive “Linz” symphony, composed in a quick four days after a last minute request for a concert during a visit to Linz, Austria.
